ALL WE NEED IS TED LASSO: Part 3 – Be a Goldfish

Be a GOLDFISH Read Write Think with Renee

“You know what the happiest animal on Earth is? It's a goldfish. You know why? It's got a 10-second memory." – Ted Lasso

A distinguishing factor in separating good from great athletes is often their mental fortitude, or resiliency. How fast can you bounce back from the missed foul shot or the goal that could have been prevented? Athletics is FULL of one mistake after another, BUT teams that dominate over others are those who hustle, who recover, who are resilient

If the narrative you are telling yourself is “I can’t…” or wallowing in “shoulda, coulda, woulda…” you’ll be left with a very heavy load of mental and emotional gunk to carry around with you for a very long time.

That junk clouds your ability to see reality. We hold ourselves to an incredibly high standard as teachers. Sometimes that standard is a bit out there and prevents us from living out what we are in the business of – teaching students to think independently.

Be a goldfish.

  • Live in the moment.

  • Learn in the moment.

  • Teach in the moment.

  • Bounce back. Keep going. Move forward.

Being a goldfish prevents a hypocritical mindset. Being a goldfish means we are living our learning. Being a goldfish sets us up to fail forward – learning lessons from both the expected and unexpected challenges and opportunities.

When you choose to be a goldfish, you choose to be both a resilient learner and teacher – always moving forward.
